As part of our summer program, we organized a unique occupational therapy activity at the beach, combining therapeutic goals with play and the natural joy of summertime. We hid seashells in the sand, encouraging our young participants to explore their surroundings and discover them. Through this hands-on experience, they were invited to focus their attention, engage their sense of touch, and use their hands to locate and collect the shells.
This activity offered multiple therapeutic benefits. Specifically, it supported the development of sensory processing, as the participants interacted with various textures and temperatures, strengthening their ability to organize and interpret sensory input. At the same time, their concentration improved, since the process required focus and persistence. Moreover, fine motor skills were enhanced through the use of fingers and hands in demanding yet playful movements.
Beyond the therapeutic value, this activity brought joy, a sense of freedom, and a feeling of carefree summer fun to everyone involved. The natural beach environment enhanced the overall experience, turning occupational therapy into an enjoyable, creative, and effective process. Through such experiential approaches, therapy becomes play, and essential skills are cultivated in a natural and authentic way, meaningfully supporting children's everyday lives.
